Just About to ....
Write A Report

(Tip 1 of 9 )

Draw a mind map of the main points and structure of your report.

(Tip 2 of 9)

Organise any data into a clear table or graph ready for inclusion in the report.

(Tip 3 of 9)

Don’t start with the introduction, but start with the main body of the report.

(Tip 4 of 9)

Think about your one message – what is the information telling you, and also what message would you ideally like to put out? If the two aren’t the same then you have some thinking to do!

(Tip 5 of 9 )

Investigate, if you can, what questions the reader(s) are wanting answered. Maybe ask your boss what areas they particularly want covered in the report.

(Tip 6 of 9 )

Set up a style template in Word to make the typing quicker and easier and more professional.

(Tip 7 of 9 )

Find somewhere that you won’t be disturbed, and if necessary put up a sign on the door saying “Please do not disturb”. Have a clear desk so that nothing distracts you.

(Tip 8 of 9 )

Beat procrastination by blocking some time aside in your diary for writing the report.

(Tip 9 of 9 )

Another way to beat procrastination is to tell yourself you’ll just do the first part, or you’ll just spend half an hour on it – at least you’ll have got started! And it’ll feel much better once you’re on a roll.
